Bengaluru, 11th June 2025: Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, under the expert care of Dr. Niti Raizada, Principal Director – Medical Oncology & Hemato-Oncology and Dr. Tanusree Paul, Consultant – Paediatric Oncology, successfully treated a 3-year-old girl diagnosed with Pre-B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), who presented with life threatening complication of leucocytosis and tumour lysis syndrome.
Baby Ria (Name changed) presented with high grade fever, facial swelling for three weeks and decreased urine output for 3 days. For the same complaint, she was treated in multiple hospitals. Despite undergoing treatment at several hospitals her clinical condition was deteriorating. With her deteriorating condition, the family reached Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road, placing their trust in the hospital’s expertise to help their little girl recover.
On evaluation she had elevated white blood cell counts and acute kidney injury which is a life-threatening complication. A multi-disciplinary team immediately recommended intensive care, including hemodialysis to her kidneys and medications to stabilize her condition. Once Ria was in critical condition in ICU, Dr. Niti Raizada confirmed the diagnosis of Pre-B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and initiated treatment for this aggressive form of blood cancer.
Explaining the procedure, Dr. Niti Raizada, Principal Director – Medical Oncology & Hemato- Oncology, Fortis Hospitals, Bengaluru, said, “Baby Ria, during her treatment for leukemia faced several life-threatening complications including low blood pressure, seizures, breathing difficulties. Despite all these challenges she fought bravely, and she came out of it as a true little warrior.”
Dr. Tanusree Paul, Consultant – Paediatric Oncology, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, added “Ria’s case was particularly critical due to the delayed presentation and aggressive nature of the disease. Managing such life-threatening complications requires a coordinated teamwork – Hemato oncologist, intensivist and nursing team. Seeing her respond positively and regain strength has been incredibly rewarding for the entire team.”
She completed her 6 month long intensive phase of leukemia treatment and now she is on maintenance phase. Her disease is in morphological remission. Though her journey has had many life-threatening challenges, she showed progress and is doing well.
