Young and Calarco Elected President, Vice President of the American Sociological Association 363a24

 Alford A. Young, Jr., has been elected the 118th President of the American Sociological Association (ASA), and Jessica Calarco has been elected ASA Vice President.

Young is the University of Michigan’s Diversity and Social Transformation Professor, Edgar G. Epps Collegiate Professor of Sociology, and Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Sociology, Afroamerican and African Studies, and Public Policy. He uses ethnographic, interview-based research methods to investigate the role of race in shaping the experiences of African Americans, including how low-income urban African Americans view work, how African American scholars connect their research to their academic purpose, and the experiences of faculty and students of color in higher education.

Jessica Calarco is a professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research explores how and why systems of power and privilege contribute to socioeconomic, racial, and gender inequalities in various aspects of social life, including education, family, and health. Young and Calarco will begin their  as President-Elect and Vice President-Elect on September 1, 2025. In 2026, they will succeed Shelley J. Correll, Stanford University, and Victor E. Ray, University of Iowa, respectively, as President and Vice President. Young will also chair the Program Committee, shaping the 2027 ASA Annual Meeting.
